Thanks for choosing to sign up

By being a part of nonio, you're choosing to support artists, musicians, writers, and creators of all types. We're excited to have you, and we look forward to seeing what you create as well.

A couple things you should know

It's too early on to have an EULA, but the basics of what we stand for are as follows:

We wont track you or sell your data to advertisers

Nonio is funded by you, not by ad supported revenue. That's what $1 of your subscription goes to - to providing a high quality service that we don't have to support by selling your info. Our aim is to provide a high quality user experience. We don't believe adding trackers or slowing down our site with ads is the way to do that.

You own your content

We aren't allowed to use it without permission. However we reserve the right to feature thumbnails of your content in screenshots / promotions.

We're in beta, we aren't responsible if everything blows up

By we I mean me. It's just myself, jjcm, running things. As a solo project I can't guarantee the servers wont explode tomorrow. There are no uptime guarantees here.

Your financials are handled by Stripe

While nonio is in beta, Stripe definitely isn't. Your payment info is never stored on nonio's servers. It's secure in the hands of Stripe.

Why aren't there free accounts like reddit/instagram/etc?

I have to pay for bandwidth and servers somehow. The choices are either subscription services or ad supported funding. Personally I believe that a subscription services is the lesser of two evils, for a few reasons. The first is around knowing who my customer is. With a subscription service, you are my customer. I tailor all of my experiences to the demands of the user. With an ad supported service you aren't the customer, you are the product. Ad providers are the customer and you have to build a platform to their demands. We see major issues with this model in Youtube, where videos are demonetized because they don't meet the demands of the advertisers. I want nonio to be built with you in mind, not with advertisers demands taking priority.

Why do I have to contribute to creators? Can I just pay the $1?

Nonio would be nothing without creators. The point of the platform is to fund their creativity. In addition, it means that your vote is worth something. When you're choosing to upvote a post, you're saying that this item is deserving of a slice of your pool of contribution. This means other things you've voted on will get a smaller percentage of your pool as well, so you have to vote with a conscience. A picture of a cat may not be worthy of a percentage of your pool when you've previously voted up a high quality piece of investigative journalism. The hope is that this leads to higher quality content that gets surfaced, rather than surfacing wide-appeal-but-low-effort content like r/all on reddit.

Please pick your account type:

This allows you to contribute back to the creators. You choose your subscription price, and your subscription pool is divided evenly between everything you upvote that month.

[alpha] This will allow you to upload html to the site as a post. The content is presented in an iframe. If you want the iframe to be sized according to the frontend page, include this script in your html: https://html.non.io/nonio-embedded-page.js. Feel free to test it, but note that I will be deleting posts that are simple alert tests.

Your Financials

Funds in your wallet will auto-deposit into your Stripe Connect account at the end of each month.

There are currently two ways to withdrawal money from your wallet. You can set up Stripe Connect to automatically deposit funds into your bank account at the end of each month, or you can email me at j@jjcm.org to manually withdrawal funds. I'll try and support whatever platforms I can to send money.

About Non.io

Non.io is a personal project of Jacob Miller (aka jjcm or @pwnies on Twitter). The purpose is to distribute a portion of your subscription to every post you upvote (split evenly between upvotes at the end of each month).

Open Source

The site is currently open source. You can find the repos at github.com/jjcm/nonio. Bug reports can be sent to the issue tracker in that project.

Privacy Policy

Non.io collects and stores the information provided upon signup. We also store standard nginx logs, which include IP address and browser information. We also store avatars and user submitted content. None of this information is sold or shared with third parties.

Billing Information

All billing information is stored by Stripe. Nonio stores cryptogrpahic hashes of your Stripe subscription and your Stripe account ID. Nonio does not store any credit card information or addresses on file. For personalized payouts not using Stripe, additional contact information may be stored.

Nonio stores a cryptographic hash of your password using the bcrypt algorithm. We do not store passwords in plain text.

Nonio uses server side logging. We currently do not use frontend tracking, nor is any of your information sent to third parties (with the exception of Stripe for financial data). We don't sell user data, nor do we use ad targetting or tracking.

Account Deletion

Curently there's no account deletion, not by design, I just haven't gotten to it yet. If you want to delete your account, ping me at j@jjcm.org or at @pwnies on Twiter. Account deletion will be best effort when done manually, with this as a goal:

What will be removed:

  • User info (email, password, etc)
  • Avatar
  • Submitted posts and related media
  • Stripe metadata

What won't be removed

  • Server logs
  • Comment content. Comments will be set to "abandoned" and will be disassociated from your username, but the content will remain to preserve discussion.

Location of Data

Main servers are currently located in the United States. Elements of the site may be cached by edge servers around the world.

Non.io makes no guarantees regarding uptime, payouts, accuracy of monetary transfers, or timeliness. We are very much in startup phase.
